Reigning titlist Arellano University tries one more time to advance to the finals as it faces off with last year’s finals foe San Beda on Tuesday in the Final Four of the 94th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
Denied of an elimination round sweep and an outright finals berth after dropping a 25-16, 17-25, 19-25, 25-18, 14-16 setback to San Beda a week ago, the Lady Chiefs attempt to make it to the finals again although this time they will have to do it in the Final Four against the same opponents that spoiled their bid.
Or San Beda could just replicate its massive win and play the spoiler’s role anew and force a deciding Final Four game next week.
It was AU’s first defeat of the season after roaring to eight straight wins.
The loss forged AU a three-way tie at the helm with College of St. Benilde and San Beda on 8-1 cards with the former winding up the No. 2 seed.
The AU-SBU match is set at 2 p.m.
CSB ended up No. 1 and will tackle University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, which finished at No. 4 with a 6-3 record.
The Lady Blazers, now mentored by Jerry Yee, are gunning to barge into the finals for the first time since ending up there and eventually winning it all four years back.
CSB owns a slight edge over UPHSD after the former beat the latter, 24-26, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, in their only meeting this season on Dec. 4.
Meanwhile, No. 3 AU clashes with No. 4 Emilio Aguinaldo College in the first stepladder semis at 12 noon.
The winner tackles No. 2 CSB next week with the winner of that duel barging into the best-of-three finals against defending champion UPHSD, which swept its way there.
In the juniors’ side, No. 3 Letran and No. 4 EAC collide at 10 a.m. with the victor taking on No. 2 Lyceum of the Philippines University next week.
UPHSD, the reigning titlist, zoomed straight to the finals after a nine-game sweep of the elims.
