WORLD boxing champion Gabriel “Flash” Elorde may have been long gone, but he is surely not forgotten.
And as part of the 84th birth anniversary of the late boxing great, the Elorde family will hold the 19th Elorde Memorial Awards: Banquet of Champions on March 25 at Okada Manila.
Three of the country’s best and brightest fighters – Jerwin Ancajas, Michel Dasmarinas and Vic Saludar – will be honored as “Boxers of the Year” during fitting ceremonies to be attended by Elorde’s widow, Laura, and his children.
“This will be another memorable night in boxing. The whole Elorde family is very happy to celebrate and share all the blessings we have in boxing,” said Liza Elorde, wife of Elorde’s son Johnny and the main organizer of the annual awards night in honor of the great Filipino champion who passed away in 1985.
“This is our 19th year. This is our family legacy. Mahal namin lahat ang boxing, kahit na nun nawala ang aming ama (Flash Elorde) nun January,1985,” added Elorde, who attended the 14th “Usapang Sports” by the Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) at the National Press Club in Intramuros.
Liza Elorde was one of the special guests of the weekly sports forum,along with husband Johnny and sons Juan Miguel “Migs”Elorde and Juan Martin “Bai” Elorde and Ancajas and manager Joven Jimenez.
“Through this award, we want to inspire upcoming boxers to become champions. “We’re honoring champions who made good the previous year. We’re also giving awards to the best promoter, best trainer, best judge, best referee, most promising boxer, best fight and citations to our benefactors and friends who are instrumental in the development of Philippine boxing,” added Elorde.
Elorde said a blockbuster “Boxing Kontra Droga” promotion will also be held starting at 3 p.m. at Okada as part of the “Elorde Awards: Banquet of Champions.”
Juan Miguel Elorde will defend his WBO Asia-Pacific junior featherweight title against Shoehei Kawashima of Japan in the main event.
His brother,Juan Martin Elorde, will battle Rengga Rengga of Indonesia in a six-round match.
Completing the promotion are the fight between Casey Morton of the US aganst Chiehigano of Japan (10 rounds, 112 lbs); and Anvar Turapov of Uzbekistan against Takahik
The Elorde Awards Night was first held in 2000.
