“Nagkaroon ako ng culture shock kasi naka-immerse lang kami sa ‘don sa sementeryo (for 10 days),” recalled Joem Bascon when asked to talk about how it was like to work on the Daniel Palacio movie “Pailalim.”
The film won best picture and best director for Palacio in the 2019 Sinag Maynila Film Festival, which runs until April 17 in select cinemas. It also brought home the best editing and best cinematography trophies.
“So n’ong pumunta ako ABS-CBN (for a look test), nabibigla ako sa camera… naging anti-social ako. Gusto ko lang maging normal ang buhay ko,” Joem told reporters during the Sinag Maynila opening ceremony held at the Podium.
“Pailalim” tells of Bangis, a gravedigger living inside a cemetery mausoleum. He is pushed to the limit when his daughter becomes critically ill. With no other means to bring her to a hospital for proper medication, he is left with one option: to steal a newly buried corpse for money and hope everything is not too late for his daughter.
Joem Bascon, currently under ABS-CBN’s talent arm, Star Magic, has played several antagonist roles. He won best supporting actor (9th Gawad Tanglaw awards) and Pinakapasadong Katuwang na Actor (13th Gawad Pasado Awards) for the movie “Noy.” He also won the Breakthrough Performance by an Actor award for “Batanes: Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan.”
