Three more sports have joined the growing Philippine Olympic Committee family.
POC chairman Abraham “Bambol’’ Tolentino announced on Thursday that kickboxing, skateboarding and paragliding have been approved as associate members by the POC executive board.
“The national associations of these sports are now part of the POC family,’’ said Tolentino after the meeting held at the Capitol Commons in Pasig City.
Apart from these NSAs, the POC recognized surfing, floorball, tchoukball and sikaran during its previous general assembly.
The Samahang Kickboxing sa Pilipinas will take lead in the contact sport during the 30th Southeast Asian Games that the country will host next year.
Kickboxing has initially offered seven gold medals in the SEAG with one female and six male weight categories.
The POC also readily embraced skateboarding after its star, Margielyn Didal, pocketed as gold medal in this year’s Asian Games in Indonesia.
According to Tolentino, a new group in arnis has also entered the POC with the Philippine Eskrima and Kali Arnis Federation of Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri getting the recognition.
The Pekaf will replace Arnis Philippines Inc. of Raymond Velayo as the local governing body in the sport.
