“Sana mas i-encourage pa natin at palawakin natin ang pagkakaisa sa industriya, kaysa putting down filmmakers and criticizing the industry,” declared award-winning filmmaker Brillante Mendoza, who is also the festival director of the upcoming 2019 Sinag Maynila Film Festival.
At the press launch of the fifth edition of Sinag Maynila on March 7, the Cannes Film Festival best director said: “It’s not easy for filmmakers to make films. It’s not easy for producers to produce films, which (they) don’t know will make money. At this point in time, kailangan tayo magtulungan. Huwag tayo mawalan ng pag-asa.”
Sinag Maynila, the independent film festival founded by Mendoza and Solar Entertainment’s Wilson Tieng in 2014, has become an important pathway for Filipino film artists to communicate their stories. It has also given opportunities for film enthusiasts to watch unique and exciting films.
Sinag Maynila features three competition sections, namely full-length, short film and documentary.
The competing full-length features are “Akin ang Korona” directed by Zig Dulay, “Jesusa” by Ronald Carballo, “Jino To Mari” by Joselito “Jay” Altarejos, “Pailalim” by Daniel Palacio, and “Underground” by Ralston Jover
Competing in the short film category are “Bisperas” by Ralph Quincena, “Dana Jung” by John Rogers, “Dude Pare Bro” by Lora Cerdan, “Kiss” by Harlene Bautista, “Kilos” by Marjon Santos, “Marian” by Brian Patrick Lim, “Memories of the Rising Sun” by Lawrence Fajardo, “Nagmamahal, Sal” by Jeff Subrabas, “Ngiti ni Nazareno” by Louie Ignacio and “Panaghoy” by Alvin Baloloy.
